JR Edicion Limitada alternative to Montecristo Edmundo PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Dan
So... given that this is a new year, and given the present state of the economy, and also given that I'm all about second chances, I thought I'd try these.  I had an absolutely horrid experience with a bundle of these previously reviewed.

Initial Thoughts

Let's face it, there are some things that simply don't go together.  Perhaps cheap cigar and good cigar smoking experience is one of those.  I'm reminded of what happened when my Dad thought that "livestock" and "city lot" somehow went together.  This would be the sad story of "Daisey" the pink pig, who subsequently became Daisey the bacon slab, pork chops, etc., after neighbors complained about the aforementioned cute porcine pet.  So, with much skepticism, I'll give this particular brand of cigars a try.

I'll preface this by saying, that the wrappers for this particular cigar are from none other than Oliva, makers of "Nub' and 'Serie V' cigars.  Sniffing the cigar provides me with a slightly pungent, earthy smell.  The cigar appears to be well constructed with a slightly veiny wrapper and no observable soft spots.

The Smoke

I use my punch cutter, toast the foot and take my first puff.  I'm greeted with a slightly sweet, peppery flavor and a slightly nutty nuance thrown in for good measure.  If this continues throughout the cigar, we may have a possible winner here!  So far, the burn is nice, draw is pretty much perfect, and the stick provides plenty of billowy smoke.  The ash is a whiteish grey.

At the 1/3rd point, the flavor is a little more intense, and I'd definitely call this a full bodied cigar.  I'm seeing a little unevenness in the burn, nothing to write home about, but it IS noticeable. Draw continues to be excellent.

At the 2/3rd point, the burn continues to be uneven; the flavor is still pretty darn good, and the draw continues to be basically perfect.  I decided to do a little "touch up" on the cigar to address the burn issue so I can actually smoke this all the way down to the numb.  I haveta say, all in all, its a decently tasty cigar.

And I'm done.  All in all, this was a decent cigar, and when you take a look at the cost per stick, its a pretty damned good deal.  I'll still say that I'm skeptical, primarily due to my previous experience.  However, I'm willing to order another bundle and see if in fact JR Cigars has actually 'fixed' whatever was wrong with the previous cigars that I tried.

 The Rating

Flavor: 7/10Good full bodied flavor with some nuances.
 Draw:10/10 Perfect draw.
Construction:6/10Good construction, the wrapper was a little veiny, and the issue with the burn detracted from the overall experience.
Overall:7/10I was pleasantly surprised with this cigar.
