After getting flamed for his post on the alt.smoking.cigar usenet group, Dan puffs on a RYJ in an attempt to console himself.
Initial Thoughts I purchased this cigar as part of a "Dutch Auction" of toros from JR Cigar. I don't think one can go particularly wrong with an RYJ, but hey... I've been surprised before. The cigar appears to be well constructed. I observed some veininess. Taking a good sniff... the cigar smells somewhat sweet, with a some kind of wood (Oak?) thrown in for good measure. My animal rights activist daughter insists the cigar smells like shit, so, obviously the sniff test is subjective. The Smoke I clip the cigar, no issues with the cap, and I toast and ignite the foot of the smoke. My initial thoughts with the first puff are: somewhat sweet, with good complexity. Given the events of today and yesterday, I'm having a vodka martini to accompany the smoke. Puffing on the stogie produces generous amounts of smoke. I'm noticing some changes to the taste -- not quite so sweet, hints of oak... leather... something. The point would be, the cigar has excellent complexity with medium flavor. Thus far the draw is quite good, and burn is equally good. At the 1/3 point, flavor is slightly sweet with good complexity. At the 2/3 point, the cigar is actually getting a little peppery, and the burn continues to be perfect. I smoked the cigar down to the nub, and was definitely wanting more. The Rating This was an excellent cigar, as one would expect from a Romeo Y Julieta. I was definitely not disappointed.
